Welcome To Elk Hunting University 2012

by Hunter Outreach Coordinator Jim Bulger

ElkBuilding on the 2010 and 2011 curricula, the 2012 Elk Hunting University will add new tactics and techniques to your elk hunting tool box. Guest lecturers will discuss tips they've learned about hunting elk over the years.

Interested in building upon our elk hunting skill set? Review the 2010 and 2011 lessons in preparation for this year's lessons. Please refer to the 2012 big game regulations brochure for the 2012 season dates, regulations and more.

Here are a few things you can do to prepare for the 2012 season:

  • Inventory your camp gear and repair/replace worn out gear.
  • Calendar time at the rifle range over the summer. Plan to practice shots from new distances and shooting positions to simulate hunting situations.
  • Research ammunition and loads if you are thinking of trying something new.
  • If you are planning to bow hunt, get your bow tuned and practice from varying distances and shooting angles, and practice your range estimation.
  • Create a "Plan B" (in case you don't draw your limited license) by reviewing license options.

If you have any questions concerning applications, regulations or choosing a place to hunt, please call one of our hunting planners at 303-297-1192.

Colorado Hunting Atlas

Map Resource for Big Game Hunters

Colorado Hunting Atlas Screen ShotAn improved version of the popular MapIt! interactive mapping tool is available to big game hunters! The Colorado Hunting Atlas now allows users to view summer and winter ranges, migration patterns, and concentration areas, all by specific big game species. Current big game species available include elk, mule deer, pronghorn and white-tailed deer. The species details are placed directly on Bing™ street maps, USGS topographic maps or high resolution color aerial photography.

Hunter Reference details can also be added that allow hunters to view places of interest, boundaries, campgrounds, Colorado Parks and Wildlife license agents and more.

A series of short video tutorials have been developed to provide a walkthrough of these great new features.

Start scouting from the comfort of your home today using the Colorado Hunting Atlas.
