Small Shooting Range Grant Applications Open

Parking lot created with funds from a small-range grant.Applications for the 2013 Shooting Range Small Grant Program are now being accepted.

The deadline is August 30, 2013.

Third party entities across Colorado can apply for funding for improvements to public and private shooting range facilities that allow hunter education classes and public sight-in days.

Approximately five projects will be selected annually, with a total of $20,000 available for grants. Each project proposed should have a budget not less than $500 and not more than $5,000.

Applicants must match the Shooting Range Small Grant Program award with non-federal cash or in-kind services (donated labor and/or supplies and equipment use).

It is very important that proposed grant activities will produce improvements at shooting ranges that are readily available for public use (some private use is allowed). A project proposal will be ranked primarily in terms of new and/or improved shooting range opportunities for hunter education, hunter sight-in and practice, and youth participation in shooting sports.

DIY Hunt Show Comes to Southwest

The producer of On Your Own Adventures.Randy Newberg, a hunter and TV show producer in Montana brought his video crew to the Southwest region during the 2012 third rifle season. His show specializes in do-it-yourself hunts on public lands in the West. The show, “On Your Own Adventures” airs on the Sportsmen's Channel, a cable outlet.

Newberg is a serious and ethical hunter and some of his shows end with no animal being harvested.

This year the crew hunted for a cow elk and deer near Hotchkiss. Despite four hard days of hunting, the crew didn’t even see an elk. Newberg did harvest a small buck.

In Gunnison, the crew videotaped an interview with J Wenum, Area 16 wildlife manager, and showed the process for buying a license.
The show is scheduled to air in June. This is the third time Newberg has taped shows in Colorado.
