Why a Rangewide Plan?

In  2000, the Gunnison Sage-grouse was designated as a candidate species for listing under the Endangered Species Act by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The plan is necessary to create a rangewide perspective to the long-term survival of the Gunnison Sage-grouse. The foundation of this plan was the local conservation plans, which are complete for 7 GSG populations.

• The rangewide plan provides the latest in scientific knowledge with respect to minimum viable population size and habitat requirements. A comprehensive rangewide conservation plan for this species is necessary for consistent and timely habitat improvements and population expansions that will eventually remove this species from listing consideration with the USFWS.

What is the Plan's Purpose?

The purpose of the plan is to protect, enhance, and conserve Gunnison Sage-grouse populations and their habitats. It will do this by providing a rangewide perspective, guidance and recommendations to local working groups and other interested or affected parties and stakeholders.
