How to volunteer

Volunteer LogoBefore participating in a project, you must register as a volunteer and complete an orientation. Start by applying online or requesting an application from a regional volunteer coordinator. Then attend an in-person volunteer orientation or complete the self quiz based upon the Volunteer Handbook. Once this process has been completed, you may sign up for projects.

To notify you about projects, we'll send you a quarterly issue of Call of the Wild, our volunteer newsletter, either electronically or in the mail. It includes information about the Volunteer Program and lists current projects. You will also be able to view current opportunities online. When you find a project that interests you, request an assignment, or contact the staff person in charge of that project directly.

Volunteer Handbook

To introduce you to our agency and to explain some of our policies and procedures we have created a Volunteer Handbook . We suggest that you use this Handbook as you begin your work and continue to use it as a reference and guide. If you choose to submit the Volunteer Handbook Self Test  (4.5MB) in lieu of attending an orientation, you will need to read the handbook for the answers.
What to expect

We want to make your volunteer experience satisfying and rewarding. You can expect opportunities to expand your knowledge and enhance your interests in Colorado wildlife.

You can expect timely communication about volunteer projects and opportunities through the quarterly newsletter and from this web site.

There are many ways to thank you. Sometimes, simply saying it is enough. To show our appreciation, however, we also hold an annual event with awards and presentations. We hope to include you in next year's celebration.

Each project has a selection process designed to match volunteers with that project. The selection process depends upon the qualifications required for the project, the number of volunteers interested, and the needs of the project supervisor.

What the program expects from you

When you choose to participate in a volunteer project, it is expected that you will see the project through to completion and in a professional manner.

If you choose to volunteer one day per week, per month, or per year, you are welcomed and appreciated for what you can give. All that is asked is that you have a continuing interest in helping out.

Upon completion of a project, we require that you report the hours you worked to your volunteer coordinator. Time sheets are available online or from your coordinator.

As an important part of the DOW's work force, you are encouraged to comment on your experiences with the DOW. If there is something that could be done better, please let your coordinator know. Because of the nature of work opportunities with the Division - often in outlying areas, on irregular schedules, etc,- the regional volunteer coordinator will not be there most of the time to be sure things work smoothly. That makes your comments even more important.

You may complete a written evaluation for a project online, be sent an evaluation form in the mail, or be contacted by telephone for your input. Your comments will be used to improve the program, and will be passed on to the project supervisor for his or her information as well.

And last, it is your responsibility to keep your address, contact numbers and email addresses current.  Please inform your volunteer coordinator when there is any change.
