- Purchasing a License for a Family Member or Friend:
If purchasing the license at a CPW office you, the purchaser, must provide any one of #s 1-8 (above) in the licensee’s name as acceptable proof. The purchaser (you) must complete an affidavit and a 'gift sticker' (provided by the office) certifying that the information given is true.
If purchasing the license for a family member or friend from a license agent (sporting goods store, outfitter, tackle shop, etc.), you must provide any one of #s 1-6 (above) issued in the licensee’s name (that of your relative or friend) as proof. License agents require purchasers to complete an affidavit and 'gift sticker' (provided by the agent) certifying that the information given is true.
You should know that providing false information in the purchase of a license is a misdemeanor and punishable under Colorado law.
- Purchasing a License at a Sporting Goods Store:
License agents (retail sellers of hunting licenses, like sporting goods stores) will only accept one of #s 1-5 (above) as proof.
- Buying a License Online or by Mail:
For mailed applications, just mark an 'X' in the Hunter Education checkbox on the application (applications available from license agents, CPW offices, and included in hunting brochures.) For online applications, you will need to provide your hunter education number, issued to you when you completed the course. You must have completed your hunter education requirement before mailing the application or applying online, and proof of hunter education completion must be carried with you when hunting or buying a license 'over the counter' (from a license agent). To learn more about online buying, go to the Total Licensing Web site.
A license issued by CPW through the mail does not require proof of hunter education at the time of application (but it is required that you have fulfilled the hunter education requirement before applying), therefore cannot be used as proof of hunter education to purchase another license. (The online application does require your hunter education number.) The hunter education proof requirement and the driver’s license residency question are just postponed until you are checked or want to buy another license. We periodically perform random investigations for fraud on applications.
- Replacing a Worn or Damaged Card:
Cards will be verified for validity by inspection or through a records check. If approved, a new Conservation Certificate (CC) with **proof of hunter education**verified** printed on it–rather than a replacement card–will be issued. Replacement CCs and hunter education cards are free if the old card is surrendered.
- Replacing a Non-Colorado Card with a Colorado Card:
If you passed the hunter education course in another state but live here now, and can show your card as proof, you can be issued a new CC with **proof of hunter education**verified** printed on it at no cost. You don’t need a Colorado hunter education card if you have a valid out-of-state card. If, however, you wish to surrender the out-of-state card for a Colorado card, there is no charge.
- Some Forms Ask for a Number That's Missing from HE Card:
If an out-of-state HE card doesn’t have a number printed on it (some states don’t use numbers to track cards), put the card's issue date and the originating state of issue in those boxes.
- Temporary Cards and Certificates:
In some states, instructors issue these upon successful completion of the course, and then the state's hunter education office mails the permanent cards to the students at a later date. These temporary documents will be honored if issued in the same calendar year the hunter is purchasing a license. However, your hunter education number will not be verified until a permanent card has been shown or until a Colorado Parks and Wildlife employee has verified your HE status with your state wildlife agency.
