Elk Hunting University 2012 is now in session! Don't miss a "lesson"; follow Elk Hunting University as it expands upon prior topics and introduces new subjects to further build and refine big game hunting skills and techniques.

As we have built the Hunter Outreach Program over the past eight years, we have focused on programs that would build the foundation of hunting for future generations through a youth-oriented mentoring program.
While one of the most rewarding and successful programs in the nation, our outreach efforts fall short when it comes to finding ways to teach, coach, and mentor the thousands of adult hunters and interested novices who wish to take on the challenge of hunting elk in Colorado. After much thought and discussion, the Division of Wildlife (DOW)
Hunter Outreach Program, with the assistance of field officers,
Huntmasters, and partners from across the state, is launching an on-line educational program focusing on elk hunting in Colorado. The program is designed to provide "how to" information through a series of articles, videos, and other educational tools.
As we worked to design this concept, we wanted to provide our students with fundamental information about elk hunting in Colorado. I asked my volunteer Huntmasters and other partners to write a series of articles about aspects of elk hunting in Colorado, from how to determine a place to hunt to what you have to do to get a thousand-pound elk ready for the freezer. These articles are not written by professional authors, rather by Colorado hunters who want to pass along their skills and knowledge to as many folks as they can. The articles are written in the "voice" of the author—not a polished literary product, not a hunting story to tell of another’s hunt—rather a one-to-one, personal conversation between you and the author.
We call this effort Elk Hunting University (EHU) as a framework to pass along skills and knowledge to aspiring elk hunters. As we move through this course together, realize we
are walking new ground that we have not walked before. We hope we can find innovative ways to teach you basic elk hunting skills, coach you to develop those skills to a higher level, and mentor you through articles and videos, responding to your questions and sharing with you the experiences of others.
Over the next six months, we will provide Elk Hunting University students with a new article, tips, and other information about twice a month. Each article will be introduced on the Hunting main page with a link to the complete article. Previous articles will be available, too, so students can return to earlier articles if they desire. We will add some important tips for hunters, reminders of application deadlines, and other "words of wisdom" from our collection of elk hunting professors. Our goal is to assist you as much as we can electronically before the beginning of the 2010 elk seasons, so you can take your final exam in the field and mountain valleys of Colorado!
