Elk hunting is a challenging pursuit for hunters. The terrain, weather and the animal themselves make this type of hunt one of the most interesting of all our big game hunts in Colorado. Hunters must understand the combination of their firearms and ammunition choices to be prepared for the hunt. Understanding ballistics is a key factor in successfully harvesting an elk this fall, so much so that we have devoted the next two articles to midrange ballistics. The article written by Perry Durr this week is a detailed discussion of the considerations and practical application of your skills in developing your perfect combination of firearm and ammunition. Next week, Gerry Sherman provides a follow-on discussion on the topic, and delves a bit deeper into the science of matching bullet and firearm for the approaching season. So dust off your glasses, put on your thinking cap and do your homework as you consider these two articles. They will make you think about ways to improve your skills this fall.
