Step 1: Complete Basic Archery Instructor Training

Join our CASP Mailing List to stay up to date about trainings, grants and tournaments.

Every school participating in the Colorado Archery in the Schools program must have at least one Basic Archery Instructor (BAI) certified coach. BAI courses are generally 8 hours and happen at locations around the state. All participants receive a certificate of professional development at course completion.

Once a teacher has completed the BAI certification requirements, they receive an e-mail with their personalize BAI number. Using this number, their school is eligible to purchase equipment from the National Archery in the Schools® (NASP®) program. This equipment is required to participate in the NASP® program and state, national and world tournaments.

Requirements to be able to participate in a Basic Archery Instructor (BAI) course:

  • Must be at least 18 years old;
  • Must be a Colorado-certified physical education teacher;
  • Take the BAI course. (8-12 hours);
  • Pass the BAI practical test and score at least 70% on the written test;
  • Graduates must complete and submit a BAI Graduate Information Form.

BAI courses range in cost from free (if funding is available) to $40 per participant. Participants receive training materials and hands-on experience on the range. For information about available courses check out currently scheduled Teacher Workshops.

Step 2: Find Funding to Purchase Equipment

Once a teacher has completed the BAI certification requirements, they receive an e-mail with their personalize BAI number. Using this number, their school is eligible to purchase equipment from the National Archery in the Schools® (NASP®) program. This equipment is required to participate in the NASP® program and state, national and world tournaments.

To help offset the $3,000+ cost of a complete set of school equipment, the Easton Foundation and Colorado Parks and Wildlife offer funding. Grant deadline is usually December 1st. Occasionally additional funding becomes available in the Spring, so schools are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO APPLY year-round.

A suggested "standard" school kit includes: 10 Right Hand Bows, 2 Left Hand Bows, 2 boxes arrows, 5 targets, 1 arrow curtain, 1 repair kit and 1 bow rack. To learn more about these bows and other archery equipment used, visit the Genesis website.
